How to Play Bocce

Bocce is one of the most exciting and enjoyable sports. The rules of bocce are relatively basic, and allow any skill level to participate and enjoy the game. Bocce is played with eight large balls and one smaller ball (called the pallino). Although the game can be played with 2, 4, or 8 players, for our tournament, each team will consist of 4 players.

To begin the game, divide the bocce balls evenly between team players. Each player will receive 1 ball. You will notice that your team.s bocce ball set has balls with different colors or designs than the other team. This is helpful in distinguishing your team.s bocce balls from those of the opposing team.

At random, choose a player to throw the pallino. After the pallino is thrown, the same player will throw the first bocce ball. The purpose of the game is to get your bocce balls as close as possible to the pallino. After the first player has thrown the first bocce ball, his team is considered "inside" because his ball is closer to the pallino than any of the competitors. balls. The other team is considered "outside." Whenever a team is considered "inside," it will forfeit its turn throwing bocce balls. All "outside" team players will take turns throwing their bocce balls until one of theirs gets closer to the pallino than the "inside" team.

After all players have thrown their bocce balls, the team that is "inside" will be awarded points. One point will be awarded to this team for every ball that is closer to the pallino than the closest competitor's ball. After the points are awarded, the frame is completed. Start a new frame by alternating to an opposing team player to throw the pallino and to throw the first bocce ball. A game is won when a team reaches 13 points or 20 minutes has elapsed from the start of the game (whichever occurs first). The team that leads at the 20 minute expiration will be declared the winner. If the teams are tied after 20 minutes, a one frame roll off will decide the winner.

All disputes shall be resolved by the head referee and all decisions are final.
